What is Girls on the RunĀ®?
- Physical activity-based Positive Youth Development program (PA-PYD)
- Inclusive, trauma informed, healing centered space for girls to:
- Engage in dynamic discussions
- Process complex thoughts and feelings
- Develop a robust toolkit of social emotional skills
- Access social support and build positive connections
- Navigate current and future life challenges.
- Set and accomplish high yet realistic goals
Why is GOTR Important?
- By age 6, girls identify boys as smarter than they are.
- By age 9, girls self-confidence peaks. They stop raising their hands in class and drop out of activities they love.
- 50% of girls experience bullying at a time when peer relationships are central to their emotional wellbeing
- Pre-pandemic, only 13% of girls compared to 30% of boys were getting the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity.
- Since the onset of the pandemic, there has been a 30% increase in admissions to Emergency Rooms among youth age 5-11 for depression and anxiety related issues
- 70% increase in online bullying since the beginning of the pandemic.
Program Details
GOTR programs supports girls in gaining a better understanding of who they are, recognizing the importance of teamwork and healthy relationships, and learning how they can positively connect with and shape their communities and the world.
Our social-emotional curriculum themes include: turning negative self-talk into positive self-talk, understanding emotions, standing up for self and others, dealing with peer pressure, forming and maintaining healthy relationships, and making an impact on the community.
- 8-weeks (16 lessons) after school, 90 minutes, 2x per week from September 20 to November 20 (5K)
- Evidence-based and scripted curriculum ā coaches deliver curriculum as written (no lesson planning!)
- Dynamic discussions and fun running games and activities
- GOTR provides ALL materials and supplies
Coach Requirements
- Believe in the inherent power within every girl
- Have a desire to help girls learn, grow and have fun
- Be a positive, inspiring role model (No running required!)
- Focus on girlsā effort, progress and growth
- Leave a lasting impact on the lives of girls in their community
- Volunteer coaches complete our National Coach Training ā eligible for ACT 48 credits
